Beef Farmers Went Plant Based #$@&%*!

Updated: May 18, 2018

First I want to paint the picture of how this blog came to exist. Here is the Cliff Note version of the past 38 years.

0-28 I excelled at eating the Standard American Diet (SAD). Pop-tarts, Toaster Strudels, bagels with cream cheese, yogurt, cheese sticks, Lucky Charms, Little Debbie's, fast-food (plenty), cold cuts, candy, hot dogs, and on and on and on and on. There was a sprinkle of fruit and vegetables in there. Plus several rounds of antibiotics as a kid (remember the bubblegum and grape flavored stuff?!?) for frequent ear infections and strep throat as well as treatment for acne as a teenager. As the years progressed so did the SAD symptoms:

  • Acne

  • Severe Constipation

  • Mood Swings

  • Anxiety

  • PMS

  • Painful Periods

  • Foggy Brain

  • Achy Joints

  • Sinus Infections

  • Seasonal & Mold Allergies

  • Frequent Colds and Flu's

After the birth of my first son, current SAD symptoms persisted and new ones arrived - postpartum baby blues anyone? One day while my baby slept I was watching #Oprah and #AliciaSilverstone was talking about her cookbook #thekinddiet. She listed the above SAD symptoms and shared that when she removed dairy her symptoms lessened.

I was like #$@&%*!

I LOVE dairy.

But I was interested in the possibility of my symptoms getting better and dumbfounded that possibly the food I was eating was making me sick. Really?

I decided to try it for 10 days...I can handle giving up dairy for 10 days. I did it and there was a noticeable difference in my skin and my constipation had become less of a pain in the ass. I did feel better.

28-37 The next 10 years were a trial and error and an off and on again relationship with certain foods that appeared to aggravate my symptoms. I learned how hard it was to stay away from the SAD foods - it took will power and dedication. They are everywhere. I had to literally re-wire my brain. It did not happen overnight.

I heard of the Paleo Diet from a student and dove in head first - at the time it was the perfect framework for me to stay disciplined. It made a lot of sense.

My diet consisted of high levels of both plant and animal fat as well as high amounts of protein with a side of veggies. Fruit was infrequent.

For the first year or so I felt GREAT! My SAD symptoms dissipated and I had a ton of strength and energy. I was telling everyone I could about the Paleo lifestyle and how it can change their lives as it had mine. I still believe it can and it's a monumental improvement on the SAD.

34-37 The random symptoms began to slowly come back and some new ones arrived. I could feel my health and vitality slowly slipping away as the years progressed on the Paleo Diet.

  • Exhaustion (afternoon crash / need for extra cups of coffee to just get through)

  • Constipation

  • Painful Periods & Ovulation - more so than ever

  • PMS

  • Muscle/Joint Stiffness

  • Foggy Brain

  • Feeling out of it

37-Present A late winter health snafoo landed me in the ER at 2:00am. I was back home by 12pm that day with a resolution and a healing journey ahead of me. During the first few days of resting I re-stumbled upon a wellness advocate that I had once heard of, The Medical Medium.

During the week on the couch I read several of his blog posts, listened to his radio shows, and then ordered two of his books #MedicalMedium and #LifeChangingFoods - that I read cover to cover in 2 days.

This was an "ah-ha" time.

With an open mind and a dash of skepticism - I began to slowly implement the advice the medium was sharing - it was speaking to me loud and clear. The more I listened and read the more it "just makes sense!" My husband didn’t disagree as I described all of my symptoms and how the #MedicalMedium made sense of them. My mind was blown away.

For the month of April I slowly removed the "No" foods from my diet and followed the MM protocol - eating a #plantbased diet (not vegan as honey is an extremely important food for healing). Many foods were already removed since I was Paleo but I needed to add a significant amount of vegetables in my diet and even more fruit. These changes caused detox symptoms and rapid die off - not a pleasant week but I was already laid up on the couch.

  • Gluten

  • Dairy

  • Eggs

  • Canola

  • Citric Acid

  • Corn

Present Day- I am on day 13 of the #28daycleanse as well as drinking the MM recommended daily #celeryjuice and #heavymetaldetoxsmoothie #HMDS

Constipation - GONE

Acne - healing

Exhaustion from Adrenal Fatigue - GONE and have lots of energy throughout the day

Muscle Stiffness -GONE my yoga practice feels lighter

Mood Swings - GONE and feeling calmer and more peaceful each day

Anxiety - GONE

Brain Fog - GONE

Painful Period - 2 cycles in and I did not take a SAD pain reliever for the first time since I began having a cycle! Cramping is mild to none. Breast tenderness - GONE

Overall I feel a huge different in my health and vitality in such a short time. I went from liking vegetables and fruit to loving and craving them. The more fresh (raw when possible) fruit and vegetables I eat the more my body is craving them and not craving the SAD food items. (Okay, Duh.)

For the first time I feel like I can write about and share my experiences from a place of authenticity and truly feeling full of health and vitality.

Students often ask me to "create a video so I can do that at home!", "send me that recipe please!", and "I want to know more about that, can you write it down for me?" Student's often share their symptoms with me.

Here it is, in one place, for you to see. This blog will contain conscious lifestyle topics, food to heal and nourish, and of course yoga.

This health journey is inspired and informed by #TheMedicalMedium

I highly recommend reading his first book: The Medical Medium and then Life Changing Food...then read the rest of them!

If you are plagued with random health symptoms or even diagnosed health specific symptoms than I couldn't recommend the Medical Medium more so than now. Tens of thousands of people are healing, I am too, and I would love to inspire you to as well.

Bonus: my family (well maybe not the kids 100%) are loving the extra veggies and fruit and less servings of animal based protein and fats. We are all feeling great!

Does this mean the beef farmers gave up eating their amazing grass-fed beef and pastured raised chicken and eggs forever? No. But for now we are making more space in our lives, and on our plate, for our new love and appreciation for a #plantbased diet.
